What really happens if you stop publishing fresh content?

I realize I haven't had any of my sites or client sites go quiet where i dont publish any content for months, so im curious to see /hear people's views on their own case studies.

Obviously when Google crawls your site and detects new content, it rewards you by crawling more often, and possibly giving you some QDF.

But will rankings begin to suffer if content isn't published after a certain period, lets say 2 months?

If its like that business sites which didn't get updated for few months, will drop in ranking. Its doesn't have much impact on ranking but it surely help your site gain some sort of boost if you continue to update, i mean your content will start getting index and rank fast as compare to new sites. I have few sites which i didn't update from last few months but they still ranking high as i keep building links to them.

It all depends on your competition, how fast the contents are published fresh in the first page sites in your niche. If all of them are lazy then you too can get away without publishing anything new for a long time.

Mate:

If you have got indexed your website URLs in Google, that's really good for you and you can escape publishing content for 1-2 months. No worries.

But if you don't have many URLs indexed in Google and your competitors are continuously publishing, you will lose ranking in Google.

Seo is based on content so more content the more google loves you .

If you ignore the content google will ignore you.

If you add more content to google your be rewarded.

Maybe it also depends how much content you have in the first place?

I have a couple of big sites that I very rarely update and they are sitting pretty steady in the serps.

So I think it depends on the scenario, and also depends what the competition are doing - if they are pushing any aspect of their online presence forward and you are not then I guess you will get into trouble.

If you stop publishing fresh content, your website may lose traffics. You can also lead to ranking drops for your target keywords.
Marketing without content is worthless, so you need to generate good, informative and useful content to sustain in the world of competition.

from my experience with a couple of sites:

haven't published new content for a month = no impact
haven't published for 2 months = slight drop in traffic/rankings

like others said, posting regular content helps. you should always aim for that. I will continue to not post for a 3rd month and see the effect. Just to experiment.

Nothing happens.. at least in my expirience i have multiple sites with top 3 ranking for few years.. without any new post published. And these sites have just main pages services, contact, faq, terms.. its not blog type of site. As long as you have quality links you should rank..

Google doesn't rank websites, google ranks pages. Every page has a score (PR) which defines your place in search engine. Thousands of thin websites are outranking and dominating niches VS authority ones.

As long as your page has the highest PR, you will sustain your ranking. If it drops, it didn't happen because you stopped publishing content, but because your competitors are increasing their PR by making their page and domain stronger.

So, no you don't add new content unless you want to target new keywords. However, your website should have at least 20 - 50 articles to escape thin content penalty. Penalty here doesn't mean removing from index, but few drops. Google doesn't like to put 5 pages websites in top spots.

what about all those "seogurubloggers" telling they get "better rankings" if they update their content????

and that is where that "seobullshit" is comming from. blogging tards telling you "I rank for (add some random 10 word search phrase)" with no monthly volume, no commercial interest and no fuckn competition..

All fresh content does is pull long tails onto page 8 9 10. Helpful, but certainly no big SEO deal.

Side Note: there is a difference between new content and updated content. For some niche google actually love updated content.

There was this funny experiment where I lost few spots, so I change the publish date and added updated with the new date and I got my ranking back

I know even a pretty famous blog who uses a php code to make his content as published few minutes ago.

Updated content have very very very small effect on ur PR but I am pretty sure it's one of the factors

I've been doing SEO for several years and I have never updated a site for the sake of "keeping it fresh".

No, your site will not drop in ranking merely because you don't update it.

It might drop in ranking as a consequence of not updating the site since it might lose relevancy to visitors but that is entirely dependent on the topic of the site itself.

Sites are no longer "ranked", pages are. Its not 1999.

I will concede that there was a time when Google seemed to give some preference to consistently updated sites. Today this is not much of a factor imo. Though regularly updated/added content can provide other value than a "direct ranking signal" such as the obvious long tail keywords and new traffic opportunities.
