What programming language should I learn ?

Ok, I have been ewhoring for a while and I have been doing ok.

But I am trying to save some money up and possibly get into a big project
2-3 yrs from now... maybe a big web start up.. not too sure now but thinking for the future..

Some of my friends are doing php, java and phython.. but I dont know which one to start learning..

I figure learning a programming language can give me an edsge in internet marketing, epecially in CPA.

So what advice can anyone give me here...?

And this would we be the first programming language I have ever learned..lol but I have alot of free time.. so learning will be fun for me lol

to learn php what i want you to do is take your computer and tape it to the ceiling upside down, as well as your monitor, then your chair, but heres the catch, turn your chair around so you cant see the screen, then hop in, and start coding with php... cause thats how your brains going to feel, but oh wait theres more, spend 5 extra hours doing some mundane task...

OR

sit correctly, understand whats going on, and learn quickly... oh wait that doesnt happen with php, only with .net...

i recommend VS.net ;x you can pick your flavor of VB or C# i prefer c# it makes more sense, sure you type a few extra characters per line... but it looks prettier ;)
 
I'd advise you to spend ALL your time on becoming a great marketer. Then you can outsource all your tech. needs. You WILL make more money doing this...but hey, you do what you want :D

that's exactly what I feel! I once thought that programming can give you big ass $$$ but marketers are much on top. Why learn to code? Get a coder on GAF! They are cheap as hell and you can train them like dogs...haha

lol, have you ever worked with people from GAF or RAC or GAC? lol... gl with all that ;x

if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself... atleast the first time...
 
If you intend to put the learned language to use only for stuff on the web, then I'd say go with PHP, since there really is nothing that beats how quickly you can do web-related stuff with PHP.

If you intent to use the learned language for other stuff as well, my personal recommendation would be Python. Especially if you're on a Mac, or using Linux, you will find that with Python you will be able to quickly automate stuff.

With just a couple lines of code (and the right libraries) you will be able to selectively scrape content from sites, access databases and generally mash information in any way you want.

The only downsite with Python, as I see it, is that you will not find the same level of compability on webhosts as you'll find with PHP. Also, the act of setting up small simple websites is a bit more of a hassle, but for larger sites (or for a cluster of smaller sites) you have Django (python web-framework.)

Yes but eventually you might have to outsource maybe...lol

But I feel that if I learned some programming... I could gain better insight into the web and also it would make me a better IM marketer... especially when creating my own custom scripts...

hmmmm intersting point..... well shoulld i start learning python or should I start with php ?

Man that is hilarious, I thought it was just me... PHP is crazy to me, it just don't make sense.
 
I would focus on learning marketing tactics and less programming... So many great programmers don't make money marketing..

If you have to learn something I would learn php, but that would also depend on what type of sites you have. If you mainly work with wordpress then definitely learn php...
 
PHP gets my vote over python because there are tons of already written scripts you can find for free - just search "free -anything- php". Also, most opensource scripts are written in php so you can modify them - not so with python.

That said focus on marketing - you'll make tons more money!
 
Honestly once you get the point with PHP where you are working with objects (object oriented programming) instead of how you will start learning it any other language is easy to learn.

BUT depends on your needs and wants.

Ruby is awesome for scraping.

Rails is a decent way to put up web 2.0 and community sites. I love rails myself - but hat the deployment headaches that just aren't there with php. Getting better with some new things that have recently come out.

Python is really easy once you get the hang of any language.

Php is a pain in the ass to learn though. For those of us doing it for years we forget how hard we struggled at first :)

If you just need to do basic stuff though and know you aren't ever going to be able to get beyond the basics because you just aren't interested enough. Learn the basics of php and pick up one of the generators out there - codecharge studio for example.

Your still going to need to learn how to create databases, but you can create log ins, etc.. pretty easy with those things.
 
Do you guys still think that learning php would be a good thing? Or is it becoming obsolete now? Should I learn something diffrent? I was thinking of learning PHP and MySQL...

There's no reason why you can't learn programming, and work on becoming a good marketer. I know I get a lot of satisfaction out of doing certain things myself. If you're any kind of marketer, then you should have plenty of free time to BS around and learn new things :)
 
PHP for the web based stuff (ie. the stuff that drives your websites) because most of the other web scripts you will find are PHP and it is ubiquitous at all web hosts.

Python for scraping / spamming because it is a fully featured programming language and the standard library is awesome (elegant and complete libraries for scraping, posting, parsing html etc).
 
Learn how to market first, then learn how to code. you can create a product but selling it, is another beast in its own right
 
Yes learn objective-c and coca and you can make a TON with iAds. I have seen people who have made $500 in 2 weeks with just 9k impressions in their app. The conversion rates are insane.
