Earlier today I brought my 4 year old son to get his flu shots and the doctor noticed our son talking about computer stuff a lot "Let's hurry because I want to download something at home" or something like that. The doctor asked how long he stays in front of the computer and I say I have to drag him away from it everyday. She, the doctor, then gives us this really bad look and says "you really should limit time on the computer to one hour a day" which, incidentally, was what I've been trying to do for weeks. The tone of her voice couldn't have made her thoughts any clearer "that is bad parenting."

I've been at a loss for weeks about what to do about it. My son always loved educational games so I thought that there was no harm in letting him play with that. I don't want to seem like I'm bragging but I think my son is quite smart; he learned to read at 2 and a half and has no problem reading books for 6 year olds. I never ever considered having him learn code. It's perfect if you think about it. Code is like a language (or shall I say "code is a language") and what better time to learn a language than at 4 when you're brain is primed for learning language.

I let my son try that app for kids on code.org and he loves it. This could be the first step to what may be one of the most important things he can learn in his life. I don't know if my excitement is misplaced but I feel good about this. Still got to keep him away from too much junk on the computer though like angry birds or whatever no doubt about that.

Anyway, thank you again. I didn't even feel like clicking on this thread but did anyway because 'what the hell, why not.' Didn't think I'd get inspired like this. Now it's time to see if what my son can do in a few more years...
