Why you thinking about ranking??
Look at the bigger picture...you try to rank to get traffic. If your link is prominent on a major new publication, the traffic will drive itself. If you are able to do this, then spend less time backlinking and more time getting your links on more publications.

Probably nothing will happen. Because if you get a link from such websites, they already have thousands upon thousands of backlinks and your 5k won't make any difference
Sure the site has backlinks, but it doesn't have back links to the specific URL on the site that's linking to mine. I'm talking about building links to the url my article is on.
There are many goals for this site, none of which are entirely mine to decide upon. Right now, we're mainly interested in ranking

So you wanna spam the article with 5000 links which most of them probaly have a bad link neighborhood, when you just achieved a sick link.
If I were you I would go the safe route with social signals, a strong blognetwork and some high pr comments. Nothing else

If it were me I would build a link pyramid under each article on the main sites. I wouldn't hit the gold links with 5k, make some content rich blogs that point to the main article with anchored backlinks and blast them with 5k trackbacks each. I would definitely recommend freshly scraped lists for the trackbacks.
