I am in the process of making an authority site. I am in the stage of choosing a web hosting provider.

What should I look for when I choose my provider? Anyone have any experience with Hostwinds?
I know a good web hosting provider should have

  • Good server uptime
  • A good support staff
  • A good cPanel

Any recommendations on which provider I should go with?
Also, would shared hosting be enough for now? How much traffic can it handle?

Thanks!

There isn't good cPanel. cPanel is cPanel and it is the same.
But yes, fast response time of support and good uptime (stabile server) is most important.

You should always start with shared hosting and if you need over time you can upgrade to VPS and to dedi.
Except if you are starting big big project that you know in advance will need stronger server.

you should also check that they provide affordable upgrades as and when needed
you can start with shared hosting at first and upgrade to bigger plans or vps as and when needed

You seem to forget the most important factor - the good price :)

Shared hosting can handle anything as long as you get a host that uses Litespeed or Nginx

There are many things which includes good support, good uptime, backup system in place, good hardware and offers load of web hosting features including email features and more.

resources, price, support, uptime, hardware they use etc..

Support is not necessary if the hosting's quality is good, you dont need support at all. So you can check the provider's review, their uptime, their hosting's speed. If your visitors are from your country then you will need a good latency hosting to your country too.

the best you can do is check the sales thread out here, see the reviews and decide for yourself.
