I’m trying to improve my video production skills and wanted to know what really makes a difference; is it more about editing style, storytelling, or video quality, and what should beginners focus on first?

storytelling beats production quality every time, at least for social media marketing. I have managed content across ~30 accounts and the pattern is clear - a well-structured 60 second reel shot on an iPhone outperforms a K production with no hook.

priority order for beginners:
1. hook in first 0.5 seconds - pattern interrupt, bold text overlay, or unexpected visual. if you lose them here nothing else matters
2. pacing - cut every 2-3 seconds. static shots kill watch time. even a slight angle change counts as a cut
3. audio quality - viewers forgive bad video but not bad audio. a lav mic changes everything
4. story structure - problem > agitate > solve. even a 15 second video can follow this arc

editing style matters less than people think. the "overproduced" look actually hurts on platforms like TikTok and Reels because it feels like an ad. raw, slightly imperfect content signals authenticity which the algorithm rewards with higher completion rates.

one thing most beginners overlook - captions. 85% of social video is watched on mute. no captions = losing most of your audience before they even hear your message.
That’s really helpful, especially the part about hooks and pacing—I can see how that impacts watch time a lot. Totally agree on captions too, most people scroll on mute so that’s a big miss for beginners.

Storytelling usually makes the biggest difference. Even simple videos perform well if the message is clear and engaging. Good audio and clean visuals also help a lot, beginners should focus on those first before advanced editing. Simple, clear, and focused videos often work best for marketing.

So for online marketing videos, storytelling is like, totally the biggest game-changer because it connects with people way more than just fancy editing or super high quality alone. Honestly, if you're just starting out, focus on crafting a compelling narrative first, and then good quality and clean editing will just make that awesome story shine even brighter

In my experience, storytelling and clear messaging matter more than fancy editing. Even simple videos can perform well if the message is easy to follow and focused. Good audio and clean visuals also makes a big difference.

As a beginner on video creation you firstly need to understand the audience that the video will benefit and how long must the video take so people won't get tired of it.

I think storytelling is the most important part because it keeps people interested. Good video quality and editing also help, but they cannot fix a boring video. For beginners, I would focus on making clear videos with a simple story and then improve editing skills over time.

A few things that consistently move the needle for me:

- Hook in the first 2–3 seconds. If the opening frame doesn't create curiosity or show the payoff, retention dies before your message lands.
- Pacing over polish. Tight cuts, no dead air — a "rough" video with good rhythm beats a slick one that drags.
- Captions always. Most people watch muted, especially on mobile.
- One idea per video. Trying to say five things means the viewer remembers none.
- Clean audio matters more than people think — a clear voiceover + subtle background track instantly feels more professional.
- End with ONE clear CTA. Don't stack like + follow + comment + share; pick one.

Early engagement also signals the algorithm to push it further, so front-loading value pays off twice.

As a begginer, you have to focus on your content quality. Then you have to focus on video editing skills,if you are a professional editor, then you can do your work on your own.If you are not, then hire a professional. Make your content feel valuable for the consumers.

honestly most people overcomplicate the storytelling part when starting out. you don't need to be some creative genius. just go find 5 videos in your niche that already have crazy views and copy their exact hook and pacing structure. swap in your own offer or info. split test 3 different hooks for the same video because the hook is 90% of the battle anyway. do that before worrying about buying gear or writing scripts from scratch.

everyone always says storytelling but tbh when you're starting out you don't even know what your audience actually reacts to. you can spend a week writing a script and it still flops. imo the best thing to focus on is just volume and speed. make 20 or 30 videos as fast as you can. copy the formats that are already working in your niche. you'll learn way more about pacing and hooks by looking at your retention graphs after posting 30 videos than by trying to make one perfect video. just get a cheap mic so the audio doesnt hurt ears and start posting.

one thing nobody here mentioned... your retention graph tells you way more than any advice in this thread. post a few videos and actually watch where people drop off. if everyone bails at 3 seconds your hook is broke. if they leave at the 10 sec mark your pacing died there. you fix the exact spot instead of guessing.

also the copy whats working thing is solid but dont copy videos with 2m views blindly, those blew up cause of the account or timing half the time. look for smaller accounts doing 20-50k consistently, thats a repeatable format you can actually reverse engineer.

storytelling matters yeah but for a beginner you learn story by watching your own numbers, not by reading about hero arcs. just start posting

Storytelling should come first. Even simple editing and average video quality can perform well if the content keeps people interested from start to finish.
