What makes a successful social media app

It used to be just fb and insta but now there's a whole bunch of different social media apps like tik tok YouTube twitter(x) discord snap and others. All of these apps are really similar so how are all of them big and successful.

tik tok = chinese government, so thats their funding, lol discord is probably the best to study, as they have been a ground up software. They didn't get huge unlimited pocket investment, like fb.

I'm developing software I hope to be successful. I think it comes from having a good brand identity in place, and marketing regualrly and effectivly. Every successful business does success in the same way. They have a clear vision, they hold themslves accountable. They measure and manage.

Fundamentally they sell eyeballs to advertisers.

So for a successful social platform you'd need millions of active users.

Look into Skool as well.

Yeah, they seem the same but each hits a different crowd. People stick to the one that matches their vibe and interests most.
 
It comes down to two main things: unique value and user base. While they seem similar on the surface, each platform usually excels at something slightly different or caters to a specific kind of interaction or audience. Think about how TikTok focuses on short-form viral videos, Discord on community interaction, or YouTube on diverse long-form content.

Good question each platform hits a slightly different vibe. TikTok wins on short-form discovery, YouTube on long-form trust, X for fast discussions, and Discord for real communities. They overlap, but people use each one for a different kind of connection.

Each one is for a certain niche and a certain type of entertainment and business
 
Each social network succeeds because it focuses on a different user need — TikTok for entertainment, YouTube for discovery, Instagram for images, X for chat, Discord for community, and Snapchat for private sharing.
 
They look similar on the surface, but we use them for totally different reasons. We go to TikTok for entertainment, LinkedIn for work, Discord for community, and X for real-time news. They don't compete for the same task, just for our attention.
