What Linux to choose for work?

I've tested for now Arch, Manjaro, Ubuntu, Mint and elementary OS.

Arch and Manjaro, some 4 months but I've dreamed about games and removed it.

Ubuntu/Mint - after install, usually uninstall - problems with nvidia optimus always or after reboot system is dead even with console.


Maybe test pure Debian or go with Arch again? I want stability. Windows 10 is killing me.
I am using Ubuntu live for financial things now, for work Windows 10 and it's always killing resources.
16gb memory here, i7 and works like shit after few months and these updates;/ I have pro version and always forcing me updates even I've disabled it. Few weeks ago it's started to showing...ads in explorer, even it's disabled ^^

My requirements: Android Studio, virtualbox or vmware (to emulate win with phostoshop) and that's all.

Only time I've played games on Linux was on Ubuntu Desktop. Worked just fine.
 
Personally I like Ubuntu. But personally only used CLI. I tried GUI versions a few times but just dont like it, i think windows is the best for anything desktop related. Linux is best for server stuff.

but win 10 is killing any hardware;) try to leave it idle, hdd working, (idk about ssd) :D what he is doing?
 
I use linux mint and it has everything I need for productivity. Mint is basically ubuntu, but with better UI. Support for HiDPI disply is pretty good, so my display hardware is used to the full extent. I have AMD Radeon btw.

If you are having problem with the graphics card, try looking for the particular model's driver. I also had to install the driver manually.

Virtualbox and Android studio, both are available on this platform, but instead of photoshop, you could use GIMP + Inkscape which works perfectly for me.. Allthough the interface might be tough to get used to.

You want the truth? In my opinion 7200rpm spinning disk drives are just no longer up to the task of handling a modern operating system.

get an SSD drive and trust me, you will never have another issue again.

I have put SSD drives in almost the lowest end laptops that you can currently buy and they out-perform some high end laptops with spinning disks in them.

Of course, linux has a much smaller footprint but honestly if you want to work with popular software, games etc then you are just creating a big hassle for yourself running linux GUI.

I have 3 discs, 2 hdd and 1 ssd and I am just worried about SSD, if operations are running constant like with hdd... then who give me my money back for destroyed ssd?
 
I really like mint. It sounds like you didnt upgrade graphics card mate.

Search - Driver Manager and upgrade all drivers
 
tried a bunch couple years ago. aside from rolling release/fixed release, and some terminal commands,they all seem the same just different DE/WM.
i used ubuntu until the amazon bs came then moved to mint. happy with it.

Does Arch linux support HiDPI displays? I have always wanted to try the various flavours of linux but my graphics card is the main culprit why I am still staying with mint.

It is supported not specifically by the distribution (Arch) but it is supported by the main Desktop Environments (Gnome, KDE, etc). I haven't a HiDPI display but arch wiki is awesome and you should take a look at this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HiDPI

yeahh that's what I thought. Mint I guess uses KDE. Will do some testing to see if this distro fits my needs. I have another laptop sitting doing nothing. I will install Arch into it then.

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 2

With Ubuntu you should not have issues (as long you know to configure it ofc)

No problem! I'd suggest you to try installing Arch in a virtual machine first to practice as first time installing it is surely different than installing it using a GUI. Again, Arch Wiki has an awesome installation section where they explain step by step how to install and making partitions, networking and stuff like that ;)

Installation ain't a problem for me lol. The other laptop I have is currently, windows 8.1. I will reformat it and go for arch.
