What kills a video faster low CTR or low retention?

Low watch time and low engagement. That triggers their algorithm to believe people are not interested in watching that video.

Both to a certain degree

Low CTR kills short term

Low retention kills long term

Low retention - because youtube takes it as a sign of weak viewer satisfaction signal and will stop pushing your video.

Low retention kills a video way faster.
If your CTR is bad, you can always fix the thumbnail and title to save the video, and YouTube will give it another push. But if people click and instantly swipe away or close the video, the algorithm flags it as clickbait or just trash, and it completely stops showing it to anyone. Retention is king.

Low retention kills a video faster.
Low CTR means fewer people click, but the platform can still keep testing the video with different audiences, titles, and thumbnails.
Low retention tells the algorithm: “People clicked, but they didn’t want to stay.” That’s a stronger negative signal because it means the content didn’t deliver on the promise.
Best way to think about it:
CTR gets the door open.
Retention decides whether the video keeps getting pushed.
A video with average CTR but strong retention can still grow.
A video with great CTR but bad retention usually dies quickly, because it feels like clickbait to the algorithm and the viewer.

Low CTR kills it before it even gets tested, but low retention kills long-term reach. CTR gets you the click retention decides if it spreads. Both matter, but retention usually has the bigger impact once the video is already getting impressions.

Low retention kills harder imo

Low CTR can sometimes be fixed with a new title/thumb and YouTube may still test the video again later

But if people click and leave fast, YouTube instantly understands the content disappointed viewers. That usually murders distribution much faster

A video with average CTR + strong retention can still blow up
High CTR + terrible retention usually dies after the first push

Low retention probably kills it harder long term. Low CTR can sometimes be fixed with a better title or thumbnail, but if people click and leave fast YouTube usually stops pushing it pretty quickly from what I’ve seen.

Hard to tell which matters more now.

What do you think?
the funny thing is videos that have less than 10% ctr still bank in millions of views, ultimately yes your thumbnail is the gateway to getting the initial clicks, however if you cannot retain viewers, its a direct indication that your videos arent valuable enough- entertainment/informative value etc.
Focus on creating thumbnails that work by looking at what is the trending style in your niche however give more importance to the video content, you can build a fanbase by just how great and unique your videos are.
