This is why I try not to take videos, and prefer still photos.
When we were in Utah, there were plenty of moments I wish I could have started recording video and captured the true moments that occurred. So many things would have been better relived through video, from hiking in the Narrows to walking down Fremont Street and more.
However, taking photos instead alleviates the incessant need to check recordings and live through a small screen for playback that will often not occur.
I don't spend an exorbitant amount of time lining up my shots, and don't shoot 15 photos of the same moment to scrutinize for the best result after the fact. I see something wonderful, I quickly survey the surroundings to determine the best possible photo, then I take the photo, and spend the rest of the moment truly enjoying what is in front of me.
In doing so, my fellow travelers were never annoyed at me standing around with my camera, but loved that they were able to see recaps of the major events that occurred, and some of the creative angles I was able to capture. Additionally, focusing on the moment itself instead of the work involved in bottling that moment into a video or large array of images allows me to take adventures in my local area, and hit a ton of places over the course of a day.
In contrast, I know a local photographer who will sit at the top of a parking garage for two hours taking dozens of shots to get that one perfect photo where the lighting and clouds lined up just right.
Meanwhile I can go to the same parking garage and snap a shot from four different angles in 30 seconds, then spend a few minutes taking some sips of coffee and enjoying the morning breeze, then go on about my day. I try to use the Pareto Principle to get 80% of the quality of a perfect shot from 20% of the time (or less).
Worked out well so far.
