Check out Matt Woodward's blog. His name, .co.uk. He did a very comprehensive comparison between backlink checkers about a year ago, using millions of urls. Very interesting results and he got into dialogue in the comments with some of the makers of the software/sevices.

As I recall, Majestic didn't do too well and ahrefs did do well. But check his post for details. It was very well researched.

The best and most accurate, by far, is Majestic.com
I recommend you make use of the "Fresh Index" as this will give you the most recent links which actually matter.

ahrefs is good but if you want "free" check out openlinkprofiler, pretty sure they show you every link, unlimited.

ahref is best tool to check backlinks, i have also used Back Link Watch tool for analyzing backlinks.

I do prefer Ahrefs and it is the best which shows good results than other tools.. I used to refer majesticseo after Ahrefs.. Checking twice is better as you can get what you want.. But I assure you will go for Ahrefs first and then to other tools..

In my opinion, a combination of ahrefs & majesticseo gets the job done. None of both tools will cover all backlinks, there'll always be links showing up just in one of the two.

In overall, ahrefs seems to show more links while majesticseo does a better job in defining the most powerful to your site by their TF/CF metrics (and generally majesticseo in my feeling is better at listing the 'deeper' stuff as linking root domains to the domain you get a link from etc.).

I have found the list of the best backlink checkers and just wonder why almost nobody mentions BuzzSumo, Analyze Backlinks, Analyze Backlinks, Link Diagnosis.
