What is your experience with YouTube shorts??

thanks once more, and this makes a lot of sense! I can't attach screenshots right now but my experience back a few months ago looked exactly as what you describe as the "old" shorts, spiked up for a few hours and then it was removed from the shelf again. Never had that happen either that shorts got put back, the only situation where I had similar patterns was when there were external sources added because viewers noticed it when it was on the shelf and shared it on other pages which generated traffic.

yeah sorry i misspoke when i said the pattern had changed. its just that it is much less obvious now just due to my returning viewers. it will look very distinct on a channel new to shorts. if you are releasing shorts, check back daily to better notice and understand the patterns. if you only get put on for one blast (like my first short!) then thats fine. if this carries on then youtube isn't happy with how people react to your short. three waves is a good sign. if it continues after the third wave then you can expect long growth from shorts views, and it will also be promoted via suggested and browse features, pic related is my > 1M view short. as you can see it no longer gets short views (only a couple thousand) and is in the actual algo. this is what you want to achieve with a shorts channel. also "direct and unknown seems to be very on and off, anyone got any ideas what it means for shorts?

and heres the view graph for the same video

just thought the traffic source graph is very useful, here you go (sorry for (redacted) i need to take risk mitigations) note the view duration, almost 100%, insane for a long short. actually this is a very good look at short waves, tho its very zoomed out.

that's very eye-opening, thank you! And I assume in this phase after the "three-wave" process, the thumbnail of the short (and being able to influence what it looks like) must additionally gain in in relevance because once it pops up in suggested or browse, you actually need to attract the viewer's attention through it in competition with other videos? Could be that the shorts that make it there always have good thumbnails anyways though because from what you've explained earlier, a good thumbnail already seems to determine the initial success of the short on the shelf.

glad i can help you, i don't see anyone else giving their studio screenshots which i would have loved when i first started out, so i'm giving back to this community that i've lurked in for so long.

that isn't after the three wave process. the three wave process is eternal. it will always replicate. you can sorta see it there on a large scale. at the start where you cant see, it happened many times on smaller scales. the initial one is kind of the deciding one, if there is any activity after that then you should be good. thumbnails are a double edged sword. i can't elaborate on that any further. and to be clear, you CAN set the thumbnail of a short. it will appear in playlists, search, browse, suggested and any other previews. its just that the short shelf ignores that and chooses a specifically selected frame in the video to use.

I appreciate that a lot, honestly (pretty sure you'll make it to the newsletter with this thread haha). And I agree, I had searched for a place to exchange my collected analytics too and there is none I think, very unfortunate.

Thank you for the final clarification on the wave-process and the correction of my obvious error in thought on the thumbnail, it's late where I am. This has been quite the journey for me!

Best of luck with your projects, I am convinced you'll go far with it. Don't think I've ever met anyone who knows the ins and outs of YT as well as you do.

thank you! i'm so glad i could help : ). that was the annoying thing for me, i was like "hey, are my statistics normal" in terms of ctr, cpm and impressions. but all i could find was the occasional reddit post and heresay, no actual information.
feel free to fire me any questions you think of in the future, and best of luck with your youtube endeavors.

Haha you've had some very similar experiences there I see : ) Thank you for the kind words, all this is a lot to process and has sparked many ideas, I'd be glad to get back to you!

Can anyone share how was the CTR to link in the description for Youtube short such as monetizing through affiliate offer?

its 0. theres no point in putting a link in there unless your short does well (see my post above) and starts getting traffic from elsewhere. there is no button to go to the description from the shorts view.

what is your goal with that? i take it you're trying to grow channels to sell. but who would buy an account with no watch hours for a reasonable sum of money.
warm-up the channels. check out what's getting views. specify the channels. add a short intro/banner with a call to action (link in the description)

fair enough, could be a good approach since some channels seem to have better luck than others. still though, any channel can succeed imo.

The thing about youtube shorts is that, once you start getting views, it can really boost channel subscribers count and activity.

The only problem is that you can't really monetize the views well with Ads
yeah not at all. my short with > 1 million views that now gets mostly browse and suggested (traffic source graph is shown in a prior post) has only generated around 7 dollars of ad revenue. even if people see it in the normal, non shorts, view, you won't get as many ads. something else interesting i forgot to mention @f.randell23 is the device type. 99.8% of the views are on mobile, even if they are from browse and suggested. i have never seen anyone mention this before. the computer and other views are from search i would imagine. sorry again for removing information. also it has had just 2,750 ad impressions. a tiny fraction of the views.

also here is what the individual graphs look like, just so you can better see the waves (where the newer ones completely drop off) @f.randell23
