Why is it "a bad idea" to say.. send 10k emails a day from my VPS? Especially if I include an unsubscribe link and such. Why does everyone say to offload email sending to outside sources?

This because most of the great email providers are white labeled so there is much less change that those emails will be delivered in the spam folder. Of course there are some ways to get in but it is hard.

This will be a good link to read first, it will tell you how to get your email services white labeled ;)

Your IPs will not be whitelisted and most emails will probably hit the junk box. Even if your IPs haven't been blacklisted, the simple fact that they haven't gone through the warming process will make it hard to get good delivery. But on the other hand 10k a day isn't much at all and that might be low enough to stay under the radar. For that low of volume I say go for it and see what happens. Put seed emails in every thousand you send and have seed emails for each of the major ESPs.

It's hard work maintaining a mail server, even a legitimate one.
uou need to set up a lot of records (rdns, SPF etc).

you also need to join feedback look for popular email providers.

even then, you can still end up getting blacklisted, for which you will need spare ips to failover onto, AND work to get the other ip addresses cleaned.

On top of that you need to warm up all your ip addresses before you even start.

all in all it can be quite expensive in terms of time AND money.

Exactly! I paid $10k to my developer who set up everything for me just like you said. 2 months later we finally got it all set up and I started my mailing campaigns. That same night I was blocked by the email providers and had my IPs blacklisted.

Long story short, my developer failed to tell me about the warming process and I learned the hard way that it takes a long time to build up trust with the ESPs. It's their ball game and you need to play by their rules.

Exactly, you need to start sending slow.

not to say it's not doable, but sometimes it's easier to pay a third party a small monthly fee to take care of all that.

I had never heard of this warming process before. But I think I understand.

Look up rdns and SPF records. Also look up dkim records. They all need setting up.
then you need to sign up for hotmail/aol/yahoo feedback loops.
then you need to start sending slowly at first to warm the ip addresses up - sendgrid say <1million emails per month to start with but I'd say much less than that, and make sure you are sending to double opt ins so you aren't going to get any bad feedback.
this should give you a great start.

This is indeed very good and valuable information, its not the setup that is hard but everything around it.

Wow, 1 million emails is a HELL of a lot. I do not think I will need any outside services. I actually was wondering because my plan for the business I want to start (based off 7878's method) would allow clients to email their customers (using an optin) I do not think any of this will be an issue.

As I said, even if everything you send out is 100% legitimate, it's still not easy to set up, and all of the things I mentioned still need to be done.

If you're just going to send 10k a day you can easily do this for free by signing up for self-service email marketing platforms and using their free trials. Many allow 500 to 1000 emails per free trial. Just make multiple accounts and you're set. Plus, the big players have whitelisted IPs so you're covered there too.
