As I know viral marketing is marketing your product with follow the trend or latest topic.
Example, nowadays Avengers End Game is popular these days. It's time to use this topic to relate to your product and may create a banner that might be viral by people. Main point is INTERESTING and FUNNY but dun make your product focus lost.
Mostly can try upload your picture on Reddit/Imgur to viral your content/banner that relate to your product by free.
My conclusion is viral marketing equals to free marketing and powerful marketing. Totally free.

In simple words getting your product, service or news popular for no good reason by using social media or news sites. It's like chain reaction.

Viral comes from Virus.
Virus is an organism that enters your body and then multiples by itself.
In terms of marketing, it means you perform one key action, like publishing a piece of content and then the rest happens by itself. It gets shared across the web without your need to advertise it actively.
Like a virus.
Back in the day it was called word of mouth.
These days technology allows us to go way beyond that.

Your job is to provide the visibility, like using Facebook ads, and if your post is good enough (funny, scary) the majority of your audience will share, like, comment, and basically make it 'goes viral'.
From there, you just watch the stats and laugh

Example would be: Unlock something to get free something.
When user unlock (like or share your fb page ex) script let the user to access the website.
You don't have to provide nothing for free after unlocking, you just have to promise and make your audience to unlock.

I have a different definition of VIRAL MARKETING
Basically, I would look for content on social media that is DIRECTLY or SOMEWHAT related
Next, I look at its social signals - does it get shared a lot? Does it have lots of comments? etc etc
I REVERSE ENGINEER 'viral' content and come up with my own version that PLUGS into my SALES funnel
Then I reshare my REVERSE ENGINEERED content on the platforms I found the original and find other places to share this content
The key? PIGGYBACK on the appeal of tried and proven 'viral' content instead of wishing and hoping stuff you create will 'go viral'... it rarely does.

Probably the best viral marketing I've seen is Apples 1000$ monitor stand. Its totally a low volume product that most people will not buy... but the controversy it caused, put Apple in every big tech Youtubers "check this out" list. Then it became a meme, and went viral.
Thats one of the best viral marketing ideas (whether it was intentional or not) that I've seen all year.
