When you type in link:domain into google you get the number of links to that domain.

How important is that number? Is that THE number for high ranking? I have a competitor ranked #1 for a domain keyword with only 2 links.

Then another site thats always on top for many terms has 350links in google link:, many of which are .edu. I know he gets about 1.2million visitors a month. Alexa graphs show that the site went from not ranked to high rank almost overnight in summer 2010. Clearly some kind of SEO strategy. Market Samurai reports 3000+ .edu/.gov backlinks.

Other high ranking sites have less than 75 links under link:domain.

Is there a sure method to get a link listed under Google link:domain?

I will try it and report the results.
