I would say VM is better compared to losing your physical USB flash and access it by someone else.

It really depends for what you want to use it, I prefer risk and always have all I need at hand I will say USB, but I also lost lot of information too when all goes wrong, so that is to keep in mind too and got some vm corrupted because I'm not used to do backups, so is 50/50.
