I would not say there is necessarily a best method. But if you want to use some tools that work well and can speed up your link building I would recommend unique article wizard, linkvana and the link juicer.

Forum Posting is the best way of link building method. It is placing your link in your forum signature is a popular and most used link building techniques. It's beneficial if you have lots of posts under different topics in that forum.

I Think the all site need good quality back link and you you can get good quality back link from forum posting method and do follow blog comments.

Is it important that backlinks are placed from different IPs? I seem to have had success with the vast majority of links coming from my home address so I'm not sure. Thanks

Yes, IP diversity is important. Ideally you should have links from different class C IPs.

I think diversity backlinks and diversity keywords is the best way now, specially after Penguin.
With article, beside the main keywords, you should diversity keywords by other types like "click here", "check out here", "URL",...

Thanks. While we're on the subject; is using a number of different proxies enough or does Google recognise IP addresses associated with popular proxies and in turn flag those as suspicious? Not meaning to hijack the thread or anything but it seems relevant.

One way do follow link building is the best. Authority links like posting your articles in edu blogs and article directories are still killing the SE.

I think ByFoxx and aty1985 said it best, but to add to what they shared, don't miss the reality that in the end some of the best links you can and will get, will be from those that share your content naturally... In terms of best, I mean, links that will last a lot longer than fabricated them through any grey or blackhat method. The whiter your link tactics are, the less bleach you will have to use later. And no, I am not saying web 2.0 article directories or forum comments are dead, but if you do those, make sure they are just as relevant and helpful as your site content. Best of luck to you!

I think article submission is the best link building method. You have to write unique and quality content before submit on article submission sites. These article directories are tend to publish your article automatically. If you are not able to get your article in the top notch directories, you will still able to get even hundreds of links.

This method I mention in another thread have a look:

You have to built quality and manual backlinks, use software links as tier 2, try to follow this strategy:

1. Create Web 2.0 with 100% spun articles
2. High PR blog comments (PR 5+)
3. Commenting on niche relevant forums with your websites link
4. 10 to 15 URL niche directory submission
5. High PR EDU back-links PR 6+ such as profiles, blogs and Wikis
6. No. 50 to 80 Wikis back-links Wikis PR must be 7+
7. Create a page on Facebook and share your website on other social media website
8. Try to get 50 Diggs within 3 to 5 day which helps to index your website faster

I think this link building strategy is much enough to rank your new website more easily if keyword has low competition, and great SERP improvement is my guarantee through this way.

I actually asked a knowledgable person on here this exact question recently. He said that we don't really know what all Google does but it's always better to be safe and use proxies anyway.
