What is the difference between with and without quotes when searching in Google?

I know that to be on top 1 is very excited.But I want to know that to be on top 1 in which way of searching : with or without quotes
I have tried to rank my website with one keyword.When I search like that : "my keyword" my site was showed on page 1 and #4
but when I search like that : my keyword (without quotes) it show on page 2 and #20
So what is the different between 2 types of searching?

Phrase search ("")
By putting double quotes around a set of words, you are telling Google to consider the exact words in that exact order without any change. Google already uses the order and the fact that the words are together as a very strong signal and will stray from it only for a good reason, so quotes are usually unnecessary. By insisting on phrase search you might be missing good results accidentally. For example, a search for

[ "Alexander Bell" ] (with quotes) will miss the pages that refer to Alexander G. Bell.

Example:
1. you searching for: facebook emoticons
result can be: list facebook emoticons, facebook sign in, yahoo emoticons, etc
2. you searching for: "facebook emoticons"
result must be: bla bla bla facebook emoticons bla bla

What is the difference between with and without quotes when searching in Google?
