Blackhat includes backlinking legally, it uses no illegal software generation while whitehat uses mass commenter or software generation.

White Hat SEO is basically creating a site without marketing it. Even if you follow the algorithm's rule, you are manipulating and optimizing the system. The only way to be completely White Hat is purely creating content without doing keyword research, niche research, or backlinking/guest posting of any king, contrary to what many will try to defend. As all content is directed towards an audience for a specific effect, all content is manipulative, and therefore cannot be White Hat by Google's saintly definition. I'd like to hear differing opinions on this, frankly.

All marketing online is a little Black Hat.

    And it certainly isn't illegal.
