What is the difference between a proxy and a ip address???

Im new when it comes to proxies, and understanding them. Im just wondering what is the difference between a proxy and a ip address?

Such as, Say I sign up to a site, but I want multiple accounts when I use a proxy will they be able to see my true ip address at all? Or will they just see the proxy and have no way of knowing that im registering multiple times?

I believe if you're using a proxy, 99% of admins won't be able to dig further. There are more advanced techniques admins can use if they have access to other tools. I'm not sure how those tools work, but I believe the government uses them.

That being said, I want to see what a proxy expert has to say about this. I've often wondered if a proxy is all we need. Maybe the only thing we cannot hide from is the government? (and google )

When you are accessing a site through proxy, all the data is first transferred to the proxy server and then to your computer. Hence proxy can be used not only to hide your actual ip, but also to block scripts, hide user agents etc..

An IP address is your identification on the internet, every data transfer on the web has a source and a destination ip address. (it originates from somewhere and has a specific destination)

A Proxy is a service (as neo described) which acts like a "layer 4 router" between a clients request and the destination. The client contacts the proxy instead of the destination and tells the proxy to do the data transfer.
There are many purposes for this, in our case (SEO) we want that the webserver only sees the proxy and not ourself. So by interchanging the proxy we change the IP the webserver can see which is the main identification of every data transfer.

But you need to see that other identification data is passed with a HTTP data transfer, javascript,java, cookies, flash cookies, useragents and more is threatening to release another source of identification.
Most important are cookies and flash cookies.

In 99% of all cases you are well hidden if you change IP (proxy) and clear cookies + flash cookies.

Good to remember, not all proxies are anonymus, some are transparent, it's mean your true IP could be seen.

perhaps unrelated but...i need a way to change my ip every hour or so when mailing using smtp from my isp on my sendblaster desktop mailer. I can only send 1000 mails thru my concast smtp per day. That is until i change my ip which i only know how to do manually. Is there an easier way using proxies?

how to change those making them appear as they came from another computer, instead of yours?

Any software? Multi-login app?
