If you use a proxy, you'll have to focus on leaking other things like WebRTC and DNS, while VPNs mostly prevent those. VPNs change the system IP, while proxies proxy specific programs or browsers.
Of course, you can create an OpenVPN from a proxy, and with some tweaks, both can be used for your needs. VPNs are easy but mostly a big no-no if you're trying to create accounts, etc., as they are already flagged.
Like others have said, using NordVPN, ExpressVPN are good options, but I don't see a big difference from PureVPN, which comes with a lower price tag but works exactly like the other major VPNs. You can find private small-scale VPNs on the marketplace.
