What is the best operating system setup for IM?

Hey guys,

Can you share your OS setup? What do you guys think is the best setup for IM? and how do you protect yourselves against viruses and hackers? Specifically, what antivirus software have worked for you?
I just had enough with xp. My paypal got hacked twice already. Fortunately those were not my main account.

My setup now is

*Ubuntu 9.10 w/virtualbox to access microsoft windows
(this setup is working great so far)

Windows 7 Using Nod32 antivirus here
5 machines running with this setup, have never had a problem

did you activate the secondary login for paypal that actually sends a code to your cellphone?

Be sure to make a copy of your virtual machine disks so you restore easily when windows breaks. The virtual disks are located at /home/youruser/VirtualBox/HardDisks/yourmachine.vdi.

@markyr17 - i've been hearing good things about windows 7 though. I just got traumatized with xp. maybe i'll use it with my virtual machines.

@dougeetx - thats good to know man, thanks.didnt know about that feature, i'll check it out.

As an oldschool IM I still roll with Windows 95 and Netscape.

Base OS is CrunchBang Linux. Based on Ubuntu, but running openbox. Strongly recommend.

Used to VM with windows XP. Then I resurrected an old machine with 1.8Ghz CPU and 512Mb RAM. I now use this with XP for all my windows needs. I do a reinstall of the OS every other week or so. Have Avira a/v on this and that's about it.

I might explore Windows 7 when I get my new machine later this month. Still, that will only have windows as a secondary OS, with *nix of some sort as the base OS.

Kubuntu 9.10 with VPS servers on which my windows tools run. Reason I chose this setup is because Linux simply kicks ass for those who know to use it well and second because I can't let my computer run 24/7 so I need VPS/ dedicated servers anyway.

i have one suggestion for you i think you should use window7 it is a new operating system and it has new fetcher and it is more useful for net browsing.

I use DOS with a 386. Could be faster but I'm resistant to change.

ubuntu 9.10 host, xp in virtualbox. i will wait a few before jumping on the win 7 bandwagon, after all it is Microsoft.
Can't wait for ubuntu 10.04 to come out of alpha.

Had Ubuntu 9.10 with virtualbox running XP.

Now, I'm just running puppy linux.

Might get a mac just to change things up.

2 laptops with Ubuntu 9.10; 2 i7 dualthreaded quadcores on desktop PCs. Soon to buy the Windows 7 Touch PC, so I can look cool.

Primary:
I am running OSX leopard on a MBP unibody 15".
Parallels virtual machine with Windows XP.
Do all webdesign/graphics design here.

2nd:
Custom Core2Quad
Running windows 7 ult 64bit
Do all my keyword research, random other stuff, games
Video encoding...

3rd: Dell Mini 9
Running Windows XP.
Running all my automated stuff because it stays on 24/7 because of the low power usage.
