I been looking at the keywords planner and other tools trying to get in to keyword research as it seems the most important part of content writing. what tool do you think is the best? just use the free google adwords planner or use something else?

Keysearch(dot)co is very good :-)

I would say Google Keyword Planner is enough.

Google keyword planner is not enough... Unless you are good in manual keyword research, i.e analyse top 10 competition yourself.
Google keyword planner won't give you any info on whether a keyword is rankable or not.

To analyse that, you will spend a lot of time to manually research. To save time, you would need a tool, okay, there are a few tools which a lot of people use. But still after using tool, you will need to do some manual checking to confirm it is really rankable.
i) Long tail pro
ii) Keyword revealer
iii) Keysearch.co - a newcomer

All of these tools are good, however, I am more bias towards long tail pro, while it is slower than the other 2 tools I mentioned, it has been around in the market for quite a long time, and is quite a standard that individual marketers use. ( And recently it change to use data from majestic seo which I found to have more data, compared to moz data). And the owner is quite a famous blogger/marketers which is more trustworthy.

* It is a bit buggy, and slower than the other 2 I mentioned, so just test and choose whichever you like =)

And yes , I am an affiliate of long tail pro. While it is completely optional, but if you consider trying it out, would appreciate you to click on my signature. I can pinpoint you on how to analyse for low competition keyword if you needed further help =)

I really like SEMrush, it does a lot more than just your KW research. You can also monitor your competition, see all of their ad copy, backlinks, and a lot more. It's worth a look for sure.

Keysearch is really nice, I got a lifetime licenses and it was def worth it.

Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, SemRush, SerpBook, and Keywordrevealer.

I prefer you to use Google Keyword Planner, is a free AdWords tool for new or experienced advertisers. You can search for keyword and ad group ideas, it can also help you choose competitive bids and budgets to use with your campaigns. It helps you get historical statistics such as search volume data for new keyword ideas, or to get forecasts on keyword ideas.

I suggest SEMrush tool which has the uses to do competitors research, site audit and back link analysis.

I find Google adwords keyword planner is good for any keyword research.

I personally favor Long Tail Pro Platinum. If you are on a budget, you can use the Google Keyword Planner to source keywords, monthly search volume, advertiser competition and CPC then create a free account over at Keyword Revealer and you can check the competition score 3 times a day. This is how I started before I was making money and could afford the paid tools.

The best what I feel is only Google Adwords- Keyword Planner.
Use that and you will start loving.
