both phpBB and SMF are free. myBB is also free. do not know much about proboards

phpBB3, SMF is good but it's also imho more vulnerable for spambots and security attacks.

bump. anyone else have any input? Is SMF really more prone to security attacks? So far I like the look of the SMF forums much more than the others I have seen.
