Otherwise, you could use Drupal. This can really do it out of the box now without extra modules (just need to configure the relevant content fields and permissions). It might take a bit more getting used to than something simple like WordPress, but Drupal's worth the patience due to the extra power you get with it. The downside (or upside?) is automated submission software won't work with it, I guess (unless you give it a footprint and field names same as one of the old article directory scripts).
