Hey I'm super new at this stuff and have just created a website myself based around healthy food/lifestyle. What does it mean by spinning an article and how can you d it? Thanks.

So you can just copy an article which you think would look good on your site, but just with different words? Cool, do you know how to do that, is there a free way?

Of course there is a free way. Just do it. Was it unclear somehow? Spintax often looks like the below:
{You|Someone|People} {Can|Should|Will} {Spin|Re-write|Re-phrase} {Multiple|A Number Of|Many} {Sentences|Words|Paragraphs|Articles}
This will yield a number of sentences which all mean roughly the same thing. So do it by hand if you want, but most of us use spinners of some kind. Most recently I was using spinnerchief, although TheBestSpinner has always been my favorite.

Don't forget to manually edit your articles to make sure they are human readable.

Spinning is basically a software that takes the original text and using synonyms makes a new article, you can do it manually and rewrite an article or you can use a spinner which does it automatically for you. If you wish to do it manually you can use this site to find sutible synonyms when rewriting. http://www.thesaurus.com/

Turn this:

Into this:

It basically means writing/ripping an article and using software to re write it for you by replacing certain words with synonyms. You do it with software but I wouldn't recommend it.
It's a much better idea to practice writing content to improve your skills, as quality content is in high demand in IM. Spinning articles is just lazy in my opinion - if you're going to do it, you may as well just pay for content instead. You want your blog to have content that is good quality, not some spun articles that read like crap.

Its where the writer of the article takes facts and quotes which favor his position on the matter and then leaves out other facts or quotes which don't. The writer will also often twists facts to support their view even taking quotes and facts out of context.
Nowadays, automatic spinning isn't enough. It's possible to spin synonyms automatically and to get a almost readable text, but it's easy to search engines detect it.
If you can, it's better rewrite each text in phrase or paragraph level and, only later, spin manually (or automatically and reviewing after). You'll get better results.
OBS: Using this strategy, firstly I write great content for my main blog, later I rewrite it in sentence level and publish into other blogs or web 2.0 properties. When I need, I can rewrite in paragraph-level (if well written, I can use it in one of my main blogs) and rewrite sentence level again. When I'm done, I can auto-spin with better synonyms and publish to other places.

When a single articles are written in different ways but having the same sense and concept then this is known as spinning articles.
