A Practical Perspective from 5 Years Working with IPs, Proxies
This article is written purely for knowledge sharing. It does not promote services, tools, or vendors, and it does not encourage misuse.
The goal is simple: clarify what each proxy type actually is, how it behaves, and when it makes sense to use it.
1. Datacenter Proxies
Datacenter proxies use IP addresses provided by cloud providers or hosting companies (AWS, OVH, Hetzner, etc.). These IPs are not tied to real residential ISPs.

Key characteristics

  • High speed and low latency
  • Stable bandwidth
  • Easy to scale
  • Clearly identifiable as non-residential traffic

Practical use cases

  • Load testing
  • Automation in low-security environments
  • Crawling public, non-protected data
  • Internal systems, QA, or development environments

Limitations Datacenter IPs are heavily fingerprinted and often flagged by websites with even basic anti-bot systems. They are not suitable for platforms that rely on trust signals or behavioral analysis.

2. Residential Proxies

Residential proxies route traffic through IPs assigned by real Internet Service Providers to home users.

Key characteristics

  • High trust score
  • Real ISP ASN and geolocation
  • Rotating or static options
  • Lower speed compared to datacenter proxies

Practical use cases

  • Web scraping on protected sites
  • Account-based platforms
  • Geo-specific content access
  • Ad verification and SERP research

Limitations

  • Bandwidth is usually limited or metered
  • Cost is higher due to IP scarcity
  • Performance varies depending on the end user’s connection
From experience, residential proxies are about legitimacy, not speed.

3. Mobile Proxies (3G / 4G / 5G)

What they are

Mobile proxies use IPs assigned by mobile carriers. These IPs are shared across thousands of devices through Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT).

Key characteristics

  • Extremely high trust level
  • IPs rotate naturally
  • Difficult to blacklist effectively
  • Often slower and less stable

Practical use cases

  • Social media automation
  • App testing
  • Platforms with aggressive fraud detection
  • Scenarios where IP reputation is critical

Limitations

  • High cost
  • Limited concurrency
  • Less control over IP rotation logic
In high-risk environments, mobile proxies outperform all other proxy types in terms of survivability.

4. ISP Proxies (Static Residential / Carrier-Hosted)

What they are

ISP proxies are residential IPs hosted in datacenters but officially allocated by ISPs. They combine residential legitimacy with datacenter stability.

Key characteristics

  • Static residential IPs
  • Better speed than peer-to-peer residential
  • Higher trust than datacenter proxies
  • Limited availability

Practical use cases

  • Long-term account management
  • E-commerce platforms
  • Payment-sensitive workflows
  • Any use case requiring IP consistency

Limitations

  • Limited IP pool
  • More expensive than standard datacenter proxies
  • Still detectable with advanced behavioral analysis
From a technical standpoint, ISP proxies are a compromise between control and trust.

solid breakdown. one thing i'd add from the operational side is that the lines between these categories are getting blurrier. a lot of "residential" proxies on the market are actually ISP proxies being resold as residential, and some "mobile" proxies are running on emulated setups rather than real SIM hardware. that's why testing matters more than labels.
