"A proxy server is basically another computer which serves as a hub through which internet requests are processed. By connecting through one of these servers, your computer sends your requests to the server which then processes your request and returns what you were wanting."

proxy is a method for subnet mask for your ip trail .This will handle request and drive anonymously for users.On return in proxies you will get new headers and up mask which will help for to change identity and also usable for to open blocked content .But mainly proxy is usable for to change your identity ,for to open blocked sites vpn usable but VPn is different terminology as per proxies

It really depends on the proxy type and proxy provider.
I think this is the best definition of proxy for a newbie.

Well yes and no.
If your only goal is anonymity, then yes they eventually do a similar job at hiding your IP.
But they are two very different technologies. Also, generally proxies are faster than VPN.
Just look up on Wikipedia the technical differences if you are interested.
