What is Profile Links?

I have some beginner question, please dont kill me
I know SEO for 1-2 years, and I heard about 'Profile Links' alot of times,usually in positive meanings.

Anybody can tell me about it? What is it and how it helps for the site?

A link in the user profile section of a website, you may even have one here on BHW.

Profile link building is a worthwhile SEO technique lately in use. In profile link building, you create user profiles on various forums, blogs, social media, message boards, guest books and web 2.0 sites, etc. as most of these sites allow you to add your site URL and description, and so you can add your site URL along with a few anchor text links on these profiles. Thus, profile link building utilizes the authority of popular third party websites for the sake of building backlinks to the target pages.

For getting profitable results in building profile links there are some important things to be considered.
First, the profile page should be open to search engines and non-registered users. Second, the homepage must have a good PR. Third, the profile links must be ********. And finally, the site must allow for anchor texts.

They brought some good results in 2012 but not so lately.

PBN is the name of the game in 2014.

It basically means a non contextual link or a link without an article on a page that contains details about you as explained by others above.

It's still all about link diversity. It's OK to have some profile links as long as they are from high PR domains but we are talking about 10 or less links. Anything else will look too spammy.

Profile links are still very valuable for second and third tier backlinks.
