what is pinging?

Can someone tell me what pinging is? I see people using the sites pingler.com etc. What does this do? Does it get the search engines to see the links?

when do i ping?
For instance, i wrote all these articles and put them on ezine and the other article directories..but they don't have any traffic. Do i need to ping them and send backlinks to them? Do i submit them to RSS feed sites?

Also, i put up youtube videos and they don't get traffic. Do i pink and backlink my youtube videos? how do i get traffic to them?

Pinging means, let the search engines know there is new URL or content there in site. And why we ping? Just to make sure to index it fast. No need to ping ezine. If they approve your article it will be indexed soon enough.

If your URL is already indexed, no meaning in pinging.

If you need traffic from those backlinks. Create more backlinks to those backlinks and rank them on top. I am speaking about ezine.

generally, it is a utility used to test whether a particular host is reachable or not.. search engines ping websites to check if its has been updated.
 
Sending small packets of data to test speed of a connection and other variables.
 
well, how does pinging or testing the speed of a connection get me higher in the search engines. Why does everyone ping? And when do you ping? After you submit articles? Please go into more details. Thanks
