Link sculpting is (or used to be) a way to control the flow of pr of a website. If you had 2 links on a site, link 'a' and 'b', but you wanted all the linkjuice to flow out of link 'a', you would tag link b 'n0f0ll0w', like plugging a hole in a swimming pool w/ 2 holes - it would flow stronger through the other hole. Now, even if you tag link b 'n0f0ll0w', it will still only flow out of link 'a' at 50% regardless.

This method used to work just fine if you knew what you were doing but now, as Datalore says, Google has changed it's way of interpreting nofollow links. But it's a good info to have in your IM oriented head :)

Basically, it's a way to channel your link juice only to pages you care to rank.

Google has changed the way nofollow works, but some webmasters still use iframe for exactly the same purpose.

So it's better to just take the link out for link b now?

I would say that "link sculpting" is the deliberate use of internal backlinks to direct juice to where you want it to go. You might use a well-ranked inner page for a particular kw to provide juice to a weaker inner page, or your home page. The comments re: the no-follow links started with the idea that there is only a certain amount of juice in each page, and if you have 3 outbound links you cut the juice to each of them by (roughly) 1/3. The idea of using "no-follow" links was to concentrate the juice to one of the links while still having the actual link of the other two.

The idea that Google now allows juice to flow (and therefore get divided) through no-follow links is new to me.

When did this happen? Does this only apply to internal links or are external no-follow links also carrying juice now?

It is used interchangeably with the term 'PR sculpting' and refers to the practice of the developing a smart information (IA) that directly internal links to the appropriate pages to produce the largest benefit. When referencing external links it related to making certain that the same techniques as above are applied.

Smart question, but a more detailed answer could easily take hours to explain. Please let me know of further questions.
