What is link building?

Hi, what exactly is link building?

Is it basically where you try and get Traffic through white hat methods instead of using Black hat methods?

Also if I am correct, is social bookmarking when you post your website on sites like:

Link building generally consists of getting a ton of links and getting targeted links to your website.

It can be whitehat, greyhat or blackhat.

Whitehat might be commenting ******** blogs with your link, writing articles and leaving a link to your website and social bookmarking.

Greyhat includes linkwheels mainly. (Best example I can think of.)

Blackhat includes stuff like the various tools that you can buy to get links back to your website.
