What is it with USA and religion

I read througe this post:

I'm not from the states and really don't care who your next president might be. But there is a thing I don't understand.

How come Relegion is such a big part of the pressidents campaign?
People are after the black dudes minister, and the old (half dead guy) have chosen some really christian lady.

Why is Religion eaven an issue in a modern day country?

I'm not trying to offend anyone ( sorry if I have), but it just somthing thats so different from my own country - Denmark.

I agree, I don't think religion should be brought up as much as it is. Why is it an issue? because there are a lot (imo too many) very religious people who make it an issue...

Faith and stupidity go hand in hand. That's why.

don't call "religion" everything related to God. the communism its a religion too and is omnipresent. and don't forget every stupid regime called itself
"modern" or "new era" or "modern country"....
