As part of my education I was going to look at this and see if any of the plugins I get e mails about were worth bothering with, like all numpties oops newbies I am inspired by you knowledge to get on with it.
Can you recommend any plugins? Maxblogpress sent e mail with one which does all sorts and is on christmas sale should I try it?

cloaking is a black hat technique in SEO. If you want to get short term results with your website, you should do cloaking at all costs.
It`s not a short term result, i have sites up over a year. If you do it right you can have 5000+ pages website with proper onpage seo up within an hour and costs you only a domain name. So you can do the math which strategy is more profitable.
