I bet you didn't feel like opening Google.. They are 2 totally different things. I'd suggest that you Google it a bit, I'm sure you will find an answer ;)

BOth are good in their way, only you have to find what functionality you want.

I want to pick up a large mailing list from my site, and send them emails,
I'm new in all about Email Marketing
And I saw the prices in Email Marketing Software Like Mailchimp and this is very expensive for large mailing lists, and in my opinion this SMTP pretty good solution?
What is best to use to make a mailing list?

If you are building a legitimate mailing list via your site then I would personally recommend mailchimp. It is very good online service, comes with free plan for small list and is also very scalable for large lists.

Freshmail is another very good service, similar to Mailchimp.

If you use one of these providers it will cost you money in subscription fees but they take care of everything - such as analytics, unsubscribe requests, ensuring delivery to inbox etc.

If you are doing marketing and planning to get your list of emails from questionable sources, or you really want to save money then you could do it yourself using SMTP/standard email account. Its cheaper, you can use emails taken from any source etc but you won't have reliable delivery and it will be a lot more work.

SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, also sometimes used when talking about email sending servers (where you connect using email marketing software).

Email marketing software = software that is using SMTP to send emails (software for list management and email scheduling etc).

Mailchimp sends those emails by itself so..

So if you are talking about email marketing software you are talking about software like Interspire (http://www.interspire.com/emailmarketer/).
If you are talking about SMTP then you are talking about Exim or Postfix etc..

@Ambitious12: You have no idea what you are talking about, right?

@OP: if you need email sending/list management services then davids355's answer is good enough.

Thank you for your answer..
I need a tool that could help me to manage mailing list,
With this tool I want to store them(list of emails) as well to send emails easily
I have a huge mailing list, I collected it myself, through personal site.
I do not know some tools that can help me to send emails
I have a huge mailing list, but I had no way to use it ..
Can You recommend a cheap and effective tool?

Well, I'd go with commercial services like MailChimp or GetResponse, but keep in mind that if your list is huge as you claim it will cost money to send them out.
If your budget is not that big then just get a copy of Interspire, get a VPS from somewhere and just send away. You might not have very good inbox rate that way because it's possible that your IP haven't been used for mailing, but as long as your emails are spam free and look nice and legit, it should be all good.

Infact, many service providing both ie good smtp with email marketing if you have listings they will help to send your campaings to your subscribers

it depends. If your data is double opted and less in quantity then I would prefer you to use SMTP. You can get an smtp from thesmtp.com.

if you need to send bulk and not on an opted list then I would suggest to get your own softwares and server setup. And for that I can refer you emailservermanagement.com.

Let me know if you need any help from me.

Thanks

There are lots of good ESPs to send optin mails ( legit mails ) .. but if you are looking for spam then its good to configure own server because ESPs will blocked you

Any updated tutorial how to setup a SMTP on VPS with IP ROTATION?
If u buy VPS with lots of ip's lets say 200 ip's, and send 100 mails each IP a day (20k total) would this work?

Need help to setup, anyone?

Personally I use a hybrid solution (sendy) of self hosting which makes use of third party SMTP providers.. In my case I leverage Amazon SES and with that you get 10,000 emails for free daily quota. You can also set it up to use Mandrill which I suspect has better deliverability but unable to confirm that.. I mention that as I'm still trying to figure out why hotmail can be an issue - even though I have SPF and DKIM setup...

for to suggest it's better to use PowerMTA + Interspire, you can send millions of emails there. PM me.

In email marketing industry, you would be offered with two types of bulk email sending infrastructures. The first one is simple ESP solutions, doesn't need you to go into the technical details and maintenance. The second solution is you can get some company to setup self managed sending infrastructure for you with appropriate set of software applications, this will need you to maintain your infrastructure for good delivery rates, and keeping your sending reputation up to the mark. For the startups and legit email senders, solutions like Mailchimp, TheSMTP, SendGrid etc will work well.
