Hi,
I startet a multisite wordpress where the users can start their blog on my main site.

Now, I want to start a portal but dont like to be under the main site.

What is better for my portal; A fresh WP on a separate subdomain, or a site on a multisite where are the users subsites?

If you have your sites under the multisite that's considered one site.
somesite.com/site1 is on the same domain as somesite.com/site2, so they will share SEO data

if you do subdomains like this:
site1.somesite.com and site2.somesite.com then these are considered separate websites and may have different seo evaluations.

So if you already did SEO for the main site and the portal is similar in topic with the main site, my opinion is to use somesite.com/portal
If you do portal.somesite.com then you need to a lot more SEO building.

So it depends on how you want to do the SEO for the new portal. On a subdomain I believe there will be more work than as a subsite on the main site.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your opinion. ❤

If you use folders, like site.tld/user1, their SEO efforts will all add up and you will get a more powerful domain pretty fast, but you'll have to have a team that moderates the activity daily, so you don't get bad seo, spam links, or niches like pharma and porn. If you go for subdomains, users will do SEO individually and you won't get a boost from their SEO efforts, but you don't have to monitor their activity a lot.

This is the way to go, and this way, they all can share your main domains CDN with ease .. =)

Personally, I would go for subfolder. Hope that helps!
