Well to put it simply it is the ending or the extension of the domain name, for example TLD of google dot com is dot com
There are different types of TLDs, but most common are:
- traditional TLDs (com, net, org, ...)
- ccTLDs - country code TLDs (for countries and regions, like us, eu, ca, es, ...). Some of them can be registered only if you are a person/business residing in that specific country or a region.
- nTLDs (introduced ~a decade ago. Examples would be ninja, vip, xyz and thousands more. More and more nTLDs are introduced every year. Mostly they are cheap and used by spammy websites.)
- sponsored TLDs / reserved TLDs / institutional TLDs (like gov, museum, edu, mil, etc.). They are not open to the public and you can't register them easily.
