What is a paid link?

Is it just me or Matt basically talked for 7 minutes about nothing, just dictated what LAW can describe as paying/being paid (or receiving/giving something of significant value), but basically couldn't say anything about how THEY judge a paid link - because they simply can't discover whether an actual transaction took place or not (or whether it is of a significant value).

According to google, a paid link is when you buy link packages from SEO providers.

Buying directory memberships, and website memberships to have a spot to put your link seems to be fine.

All links are paid links. For example, Google sells paid links via adwords, but those links don't count towards your ranking(adwords links only count if you become real good friend$$$ with google).

Else, all other links are paid. You either pay for them in currency or in some other value. And THIS fact is what breaks Google's model : they want to control the value of links, which they can't, so we end up in this depressing situation with this corporate drone preaching bullshit on youtube videos.

Google is not a perfect system. Google can't detect or judge a link as the paid link or not.

But he probably has the ability to control who ranks where... and I wouldn't doubt he is putting some of his own websites at the top spot for competitive niches
