What is a man obsessed by knowledge and studying called like?

Been trying to remember this term for the last 30 minutes, but to no avail :(

Terms like hermit, gnostic, monastic, or mystic have all passed through my mind, but they're not the ones I'm thinking about, I'm having such a slip of the tongue at the moment that it's maddening....

Gnostic comes the closest to what I'm thinking of, but the gnostic is mainly interested in religious knowledge, and I'm referring to a person interested in studying and general knowledge, or even occult knowledge, just not purely religious.

I'm referring to people from ancient times that spend their lives with their faces buried in books and studying ancient / rare practices and sciences, something like gnostic or alchemist (but the alchemist also practices that thing, I am only interested in people who study).

If English is your native language (or even if it isn't but you know the answer) please tell me cause this lapsus is driving me up the wall. Just mention the terms that come to your mind that could mean what I'm thinking of and I'll know what it is when I see it.

nope. I mean, you could call them that if you want. But it's not fanatic :)

There's a specific term attributed to people preoccupied with learning and studying their entire life. I just can't remember the damn word at the moment, but I know it exists

when I searched for it no wikipedia page showed up (or I missed it cause I only skimmed through the SERPs), so I thought there's no explanation lol.

Anyway, I appreciate your effort. And I can see that it might be the term that best answers my question, but honestly, it's not the word I'm trying to remember. There's a simpler, and more common word but I'm having a lapsus and it's eating at me inside that I can't remember it.

Actually we do call them fanatic if someone is very into something you call them a fanatic, for examples, you could call me Ferret fanatic or Indian food fanatic

Oh, hell! Nevermind guys! It will come to me eventually....

Thanks for trying to help. When I remember it I will come here and post the bloody word for future reference in case I have another lapsus (I have them oftentimes). The thing is, it's not even an important word, it's just one that popped into my head out of the blue when I woke up, and now it's draining me of my daily creative energy and can't do anything else until I remember it. Mother f*cker!
