I know this sounds very simple, but can someone give me an explanation of what a keyword is and how it works, within an article.

how does the computer know what your keyword is. I understand a human might know what it is by reading the context of the article.
but how does the google spider know what the keyword is.

for example
I really like posting on the blackhat forum.People here are very helpful with your posting.

Now to me the keyword is blackhat. But why would the computer not think that posting is the keyword
as it comes up twice.

sorry for the basic question but its something that i have not fully understood.

Keywords are the words you want to rank for. So in that case it could be blackhat or blackhat forum. However, the site could rank for the word posting as well (although unlikely).

I wouldn't worry about it too much, just add your keywords into the page where they make sense.

You know a computer can also count keywords.
Keyword in SEO can be one word or compilation of few words (long tails), when writing an article we are writing it focusing on that specific keyword. You need to put it on the title on H2 and don't forget the density of 1-3% ( I personally stick to 1-1.5%).

Just use the search you will find everything, and you are here from 2011 how do you not know this stuff?
 
after i write an article. do i need to do anything special to show that these are the keywords.
or can i just post the article on my wordpress blog?

I would throw your main keyword into the title and then just post it, again don't worry about it too much and just make sure your content reads well.

Better Seo Practice is To have Keyword in your Title of the post. In <h2> <h3> Tags...

And as explained above the Your keyword must also be present in the article with Density of 1-2%.

keywords are simply words that others use to search in Google. For example you're looking for "xxxxxxxxxxxx yyyyyyyyyy zzzzzzzz", this becomes a keyword. Google has crawlers that visit websites and will know if there are any websites that have any content related/containing "xxxxxxxxxxxx yyyyyyyyyy zzzzzzzz". Any word (or sequence of words) is basically a keyword, it all comes down to what users search. I hope I explained this well.
 
Keywords are what people type in when they search for things on Google. These keywords have different rankings and your goal should be to have your page ranked with that certain keyword. There is a certain percentage for keyword density that you need to follow as you write the body of your articles and you need to place them on your titles, too.
