I have heard so many explanations thrown around:

- a link
- a link using your URL rather than keywords
- a reference made to your site but not actually a link
- a reference made to your URL but not actually a link
- a mention of your company name and address

Which of those is a citation, or is it something else?

A citation in im terms is something like a quote to back up something you have wrote about in a article. For example wikipedia is edited by users, but they require citations to back up their points from authoritative sources. E.g a published science paper.

A citation is a mention of your business on the web that includes your business Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP).

It has nothing to do with a backlink.

For the purposes of Local SEO, it specifically refers to a quality listing of your business in a business directory, or on a website related to your business, industry, or location.

You will also get a citation if you create your social media accounts right. Be sure to list your NAP on in your description not just in your profile, and you get a very good citation.

Great answer and 100% correct.

Social accounts can deliver citations, these are considered unstructured citations. Same with rich media citations you can build with videos and image sites.

Structured citations are obtained via business listing sites like yelp, manta, hotfrog. These are the most influential when it comes to local ranking, unstructured citations are good too because the majority of the time they come with a link. So both are great.

Citations is usually Business pages around the internet showing same NAP to help local business SEO of any country. so what is NAP
Name of Business
Address of Business
Phone Number of Business

Citations are defined as mentions of your business name and address on other webpages—even if there is no link to your website. An example of a citation might be an online yellow pages directory where your business is listed, but not linked to.

Why did you just bump three old threads, including this one dating back to 2014? Not cool...
