I post in forums and have a facebook for my site, plenty of people click on my website from here and in google analytics it comes up as a refering site is this a backlink?

I also post some articles, but I get more traffic from facebook forum posting and flickr is this okay?

Check out this link. It talks about the majority of what a backlink is. One thing it doesn't cover is follow and no-follow links.

It will give you a better idea of how they work.

So is flickr facebook and forum posting with your site in signature a good way to begin?

Yes, those are all "backlinks". Anything that "links back to your site" basically works! There is an awful lot that goes into the fine art of backlinking tho!

Look around the forum for a little while. You'll see there are people talking about manual linking, automated linking, etc. You'll get the feel for it pretty quick. Go to the download section and find a basic SEO manual and start there.

It's good to have a diversity of link sources: articles, 2.0 sites, blog comments, forum profiles, social bookmarks, etc.

google is your friend man. I suggest googling your question and reading like mad. Tons of vids out there the explain how to get backlinks, what they are, why you need em, etc.
