I wasn't sure where to post this, but it's pretty applicable to multiple sections. Anyway, I understand that SEO improves search engine rank. But unless it's on the first page, it's unlikely I'll see it. I might go up to five pages into the search results, but past that is highly unlikely.

Does 1 backlink matter if you aren't going to get more? And why? Are people actually going twelve pages into a search or is there another reason?

Humm every link matters... actual juice depends upon lots of factors...

99% search volume is on 1st of search engine... If you can't go above page 5 then there is no point in making even 1 backlink... But i don't think there is any niche which is impossible to rank...

Links are less important nowadays. My competitor surpassed a site with millions of backlinks having less than one thousand himself and a great on page seo.

One of my sites was on the 2 page of G and i got too many links and puff! Site disappeared. You got be carefull with links since this new google update.

Nowadays its quality that matters most! You can have 1000 backlinks and be outranked by a competitor with 100 high-quality backlinks from niche-related sites.

To your question: one backlink is definetely useless. You might be able to use one high PR backlink to get your site indexed in google (if you know how!). But in order to rank on the first page in google with competition you´ll most likely have to create a lot more backlinks. So if your site is today on page 5 for your keywords you should invest some time and use some methods mentioned here in this forum, and you could be able to improve your rankings!

You will have to specify your question. If you ask "What's 1 car worth?" The answer will always be "It depends".

How old is the car? What type of car? What engine? ...

Same thing counts for links. As blackheader mentioned, it's quality you should strive for.

Before you start your quest for answer first start searching for right question... Until you have correct question you are not gonna get answer which you are seeking... :)

As Blackheader said quality matters... Also isn't it is always said quality matters more then quantity and i think it applies in every aspect of life... :)

nothing is impossible in life however some are too hard to beat so hard that you give up half way and then you say it's impossible :)

Well that's normal spamming links is normally to get you kicked of google results. What were you thinking? :)

Study your competition and try to get their links plus build your own try to get quality links from good authority sites that google already likes. Count links like votes the more 'UPs' you have(from authority sites) the further you climb in google results. And if your site is new keep it low, try to build the links slower trust me the final result will be much sweeter. This is what white hat seo is, like the turtle and the rabbit story, the rabit may be faster but the turtle wins the race :p

Sorry, I was kind of unspecific. It's certainly true that the quality matters a lot. It was more of a general inquiry into the question "if my site goes from 75th to 50th on a Google search, does it matter at all unless it's for the purposes of getting it to 10th." For instance, one could spam 300 links to a few sites. And 275 of them might not benefit much in page rank relative to where the views are. Alternatively, you take one that's got more potential and is in a good niche, and you market it full steam.

I assume there is something to check your exact page rank on Google? I assume a search could find one, but is there a recommended one, preferably one that will search subdirectories or addresses of any variety.

Also, I find a keyword tool using Google. Is that the best available? I'm wondering if there is also something I can put an address into to see my rank on individual keywords.

Every link matters but as the user previously posted. High quality links are regularly a lot better than lots of PR0 links.

Sry, I cannot follow you.. which views? And don't focus on pagerank, that's not much of a factor anymore. And yes, there IS an official google-statement saying exactly this: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=6a1d6250e26e9e48&hl=en

What do you mean by exact pagerank? It will not get more precise than a number from 1 to 10.

Sorry, I mean the rank in terms of a "Google Search." This would make the first result rank 1, the 10th result rank 10, etc. So if you are going from "rank 500" to "220" you still probably aren't going to see any benefit, I would suspect?

So bad terminology on my part. Not sure what the term is for what I'm talking about.

Call it simply "position" or to be more specific "position in the serps" (Search Engine Result Pages)

And you are right, more than 80% of clicks go to the first three positions in the serps (according to a research from Cornwell University about the distribution of clicks in a google search) so being on #220 means nothing. Even #11 has low click rates because it's on the second position. Your goal should always be page 1.
