What happens when you redirect a ranking domain?

Suppose you have a website DOMAIN1.COM and it is ranking on first page for several keywords. What happens if you redirect this domain to DOMAIN2.COM?

Will you lose the rankings or will this redirection have no effect on the rankings?

In most cases the new domain will take the places of the first domain.
 
This is mostly true if the 2nd domain is niche related with 1st domain. If it is not maybe bump in rankings will happen.

I just did this. Redirected everything on the site to exactly the same pages on domain2 through htaccess
The new site took the pl;ace of the old one on first page in the space of about 3 days.
I did drop a couple of spots though

Were the domains niche related?

"Redirected everything on the site to exactly the same pages on domain2" Why did you do this? If you had just redirected domain1.com to domain2.com, wouldn't have that been enough? Nobody would've been able to access domain1.com anyway after the redirect, no?
 
It mostly matters if the 2 domains are related. Yes, most rankings will transfer to new domain. Unless you're redirecting an education blog to a porn tube.

How about you redirect a blog to a forum of the same niche?
 
A good case study, htaccess redirection usually redirects all pages to corresponding pages. Why did you have to redirect?
 
It would a make difference overall for authority gain, but for a stronger effect it would be better for the URL to match, domain1.html/subpage > domain2.html/subpage.

same goes for Keywords of the given content page.

We've done a lot of studies around this. It's not enough just to redirect the domain as a whole unless all of the previous seo value and rankings were strictly to the homepage. You will want to redirect each page that was ranking well one at a time to a specific page. You can do this with a HTACCESS file. We've found that you can retain upwards of 80% or so of SEO value if this is done properly.
 
The thing is I purchased two domains of the same name. For example, black-hat-world.com and blackhatworld.com. black-hat-world.com is ranking on first pages of Google where as blackhatworld.com is currently being redirected to black-hat-world.com. This was a blog. I didn't buy the blog. Only bought the domains.

Now I want to setup a forum on these domains. I want to use blackhatworld.com instead of black-hat-world.com. So I was thinking about redirecting black-hat-world.com (ranked domain) to blackhatworld.com and get all the search engine traffic that currently black-hat-world.com is getting.

Can this be done? Or should I just set up the forum on black-hat-world.com?
