it is horrible now. the 'searches per month' stat gives a stupidly large range. if i type in a keyword and search, it will come back with nothing, '100-1k', '1k-10k', '10k-100k' or searches per month. it used to be pretty accurate, down the the hundreds. sometimes it has the audacity to say '100k-1M'. why is it so bad now?

This is because Google wants it to be bad for SEOs.

Google wants to sell Adwords clics, that's its primary source of revenue. When it's to easy to know which keywords could be profitable (partially based on the number of monthly searches), it's bad for them. So they get pretty creative to prevent people from making money with SEO, without paying a dime of adwords.

That's also why you see the [Secure Search] on most of your visits.

I saw a trick to be able to see the number of searches per month like before on twitter. You have to set up an adwords campaign, add your keyword, and then you'll be able to see the numbers.
