I see semrush is tracking "Paid Traffic" for the given domain. Does anyone have any idea how is this tracked? What kind of ads are those? Google? Social? Facebook? What does it mean Paid Traffic and how is it tracking it?

From the horses own mouth:
These numbers are calculated using average click through rates and positioning the domain has in the top 8 paid positions on Google Ads for the keywords that we have in our database. These positions are based on national level data, not local level data.

Semrush sometimes does that by gathering clickstream data from a vast network of sources. And of course, it tracks social media ads, display ads, and so on.

Semrush accesses data from various ad networks like Google ads, Bing ads as well as social media platforms.
Semrush estimates the spending on these ads and analyzes performance metrics like click-through rates (CTR), cost per click (CPC), and conversion rates, if available.

Actually SEMrush keeps tabs on "Paid Traffic" by watching where ads for a website show up like on Google or social media and also and shows where that paid traffic is coming from.

Semrush tracks "Paid Traffic" by monitoring a domain's paid advertising efforts. It covers various platforms like Google Ads, social media ads (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and other paid channels. Essentially, it shows how much traffic a site is getting from paid campaigns across different sources.

OP, this data is not accurate at all because they do not have exact data on different networks. It is out of their control and thus use it only for an idea.

That is what I was thinking. I was wondering how would they scrape the data. If they browse google with headless browser, the ads wont be relevant for sure, and some would show others not. This measure is so stupid IMO

To be honest it is very inaccurate and always has been, it's does not even get anything close to the known figures from accounts I have worked on.
