What exactly are proxies

Hey guys I keep hearing about proxies, what exactly are they?

It's like a middleware between you and a server. It takes your request, forward it with its own IP and returns back the response.
For example if you want to go to google.com, instead of going directly to google, your request will first go to a proxy.

There's a major difference between the two:

A proxy forwards traffic from selected apps and is used to anonymize your traffic from third-party websites without any extra layer of encryption
A VPN encrypt's your system's whole traffic and anonymized even from your ISP.

Here's another diagram to see it better.

So, the major difference is that anyone sitting between your device and the server can see your traffic requests if you use a proxy. Whereas with a VPN they can't.

Also, another difference is that you can really use only one VPN connection, whereas with proxies, you can use several at once.

And finally, the goal of using either a proxy or VPN is different:

A Proxy is used to anonymize web traffic requests from accessed websites (simply, you don't want websites to know your real IP address).
A VPN is used for privacy and personal anonymity (you use it to hide your traffic even from your ISP or any snoopers located between your device and the VPN server).

Just like in real life - someone that forwards something for you.

And in this case, a computer that forwards a request for you.

In a very simple way, your browser tells a proxy -> Visit instagram.com for me -> proxy says "ok" and tells you what he got from instagram.com.

So basically, you tel the proxy what you want him to do - and he will do it for you.

And this means, instagram will see the proxys information instead of yours - since he visited instagram for you.
Like in real life, the person who forwards the message for you, they will see the person and not You who is actually behind the message.

I hope I managed to describe it in an easy way.
