While doing outreach for guest posts, I’ve noticed everyone seems to have their own way of checking a site before placing a link.

Some people focus mainly on DR/DA, while others look more at organic traffic, niche relevance, or how natural the site looks overall.

In my experience, a site with real traffic and relevant content usually feels like a safer placement than just chasing high metrics.

Just curious what others here usually check first before deciding to place a guest post.

I always check the organic traffic and the ranking keywords first. High DA or DR is easy to fake with spammy redirects, but real traffic tells the truth. If the site has a steady trend in Ahrefs, it's usually a safe bet. :cool:

First thing I check is real traffic + relevance.

If the site actually gets organic traffic and fits the niche, it’s usually a good sign.

Metrics like DR are nice, but I don’t rely on them much anymore.

Here’s how I select websites for guest post placements:
  1. Traffic dynamics. I only choose sites that are growing or stable. I also take sites that go up and down due to seasonality. For example, football sites drop when there are no matches and grow during major tournaments.
  2. Traffic volume. Usually I look at sites from 10k+.
  3. Keywords check. I make sure the keywords are not manipulated. For example, if there are a lot of queries like “site. com”, it’s probably not real brand traffic - it’s bot inflation to boost traffic and sell links. Or keywords like “2342wrfj324feri59” - they can bring traffic because they might be error codes from Windows or other software.
  4. DR. I choose a minimum of DR 20, but this is just for the initial filter.
  5. Backlinks check. I make sure there are no spammy sites, and that there are good backlinks pointing to the donor. Also checking that DR is not artificially inflated.
  6. Traffic distribution across pages. If one page gets more than 40% of the traffic, I don’t consider the site.
  7. Ratio of incoming to outgoing links. I allow a maximum of 1:4. Anything higher starts to look like spam.
  8. Keywords. There should be no adult-related or other “toxic” keywords.
  9. Anchor texts. I check what anchors the donor site is getting links from.
  10. Recently, I also started checking the number of AI-related keywords. I see a correlation - more AI keywords often means a better site. It doesn’t always work, but quite often.

Totally, for me it's all about if audience actually makes sense for my content before even glancing at metrics. If the vibe isn't right for readers, high dr/pa/da means nothing

same here, i care more about real traffic and relevance than just DR, if the site ranks and looks natural it’s usually a safer pick than just chasing numbers

First thing I usually check is whether the site actually ranks and gets consistent organic traffic, then if the niche/content makes sense for the link.
Metrics are useful, but a “clean” site with real activity feels safer than a high-DR site built just for links.

I usually check topical relevance and overall content quality first, then look at metrics like DR and traffic to confirm credibility.
 
Prioritize real organic traffic and niche relevance over DR/DA, since metrics are easy to fake but genuine signals show actual value.
