Hello,

Just got back into IM after all my sites were hit by penguin. I was told to take all my sites off webmaster tools and google analytics. I wanna get back into the game now and i dunno if its still a good idea to use google analytics again or if there are a better alternative.

any advice is greatly appreciated.

thnx!

I'm gonna toss in another vote for Piwik. It's very customizable. Installation is a little harder than with G.A. though. You have to upload a .rar to your server, extract it, create database permissions and stuff... But I'm a big dummy when it comes to anything technical and I figured it out OK, so who can't?

I use statcounter.com since I'm too dumb for piwik

ill check piwik out. thanks guys. Hopefully theres a tutorial vid somewhere online for piwik. so i guess no one uses google analytics anymore huh?

No, almost everyone I know still uses GA. Piwik is great, but it runs on your server - which means increased server load. It is highly customizable, but you really need some tech background for that. Also, the install can be a bit much for a technophobe (but then again I have seen many people screw up GA installs).

I've just started using Piwik. Bear in mind it takes some work.

If you're with Hostgator, get them to lift the mod_security on your domain (ie whitelist it) for piwik to work. Also with Hostgator's shared hosting packages, keep an eye on how much memory PHP is using, and how much space your database is using. Otherwise your Piwik install will start to fail when you hit their 256Mb limit.

I used piwik and got used to it. then hostwinds crashed all my data. Now using statcounter for time being until i get better hosting elsewhere.

There are some other paid services too if you manage many site and want less headache on your hosting for piwk.

I liked piwik, but it stopped working for me after a while. Right now I'm using GetClicky.

I got rid of google analytics and saw a instant increase in serps, i know use getclicky on all my sites. Yes it's paid, but it helps me out and i don't have to worry about being watched ;)

Back to OP original question: are you switching off webmaster tools too?

Of course, using Google Analytics allows you to track keyword performances and to generate detailed statistics about your site. These statistics can be very helpful in your next optimisation campaign.
