I just got a spammy email from Jonathan Leger explaining his method for ranking sites:

He basically says he put 60% of the anchor text for links directed to his sites as either 'site brand name' or 'site url' and then makes sure that his on page SEO shows google what keywords he wants to rank for..

Here's an image he included showing anchor text diversity:

Apparently his site ranks for these keywords:

#3 link building service
#5 link building services
#3 link building package
#2 link building packages
#4 backlink building service
#2 seo link building service
#3 seo link building services
#2 effective link building service

#4 manual link building
#1 manual link building service

I'm all for anchor text diversity, but I've never heard of a strategy where you use NO keywords as anchors.. what do you think of this then?

Something to it or just spam to make you use his service..?

This stuff works.

However, you usually need a lot more backlinks if you were going to go this route, this method works for churn n burn websites, not sure if it could work long term.

That's all I have to say.

looks like the website is hiding its actual links, ranking for these terms with only 41 rd is not easy unless the 41 domains are top noch news sites

Did he mention his backlinking methods?

He's got a few dodgy softs of his own I think

Chances are high that he's got some high PR backlinks. The type of invisibile backlinks, that can't be seen in Ahrefs and leave other webmasters wondering what's going on.

Yeah, received the same email, I agree, he's hiding links and..he ranks. His service offers the usual type of links : article subm, bookmarking, high pr backlinks, etc. I am really interested to know if he achieved those rankings using only the services he offers..too good to be true!

I think that anchor text is becoming less relevant, and actually can be more of a negative thing if overdone than a positive thing if done correctly at this point. Surrounding text around a contextual link along w/ the text in title / headers and the content on the other outbound / inbound links determines the relevancy of your link IMO.

Its easy.

He has some High PR/DA/Authority site's (maybe owned by himself. The keywords are hidden in his gateway pages, thats why he is ranking good. (when google finds the gateway pages he is out!)

Yeah I am sure he is ranking good since he is bringing in traffic from spamming.

It's 100% temporary ranking; I assure you it will be down in 2 weeks.

Let's wait and watch...

As opposed to many of you, I think his anchor approach is right and good for the long term... Brand keywords, including versions of the url should dominate. After that you could go with the exact keywords in a much safer manner - penalty wise.

Hi Martin, can I ask what do you mean by gateway pages? Those "empty anchor" links? I always come across these kind of links. For example the rankcrew here. A backlink of his is from "www.xxx.com/rankcrew" and when I click on is it will redirect me to the rankcrew site itself.

Its easy.

from own networks all what i have to do to hide links, it to restrict ahrefs bot

So basically, this is nonsense, he's not ranking with this strategy at all?

It seems most members here agree that he is hiding most of his real links which have got him here.

The only thing this has made me think about is putting more importance on brand/url anchors - I may just do a little side campaign just for these or include a higher percentage in my overall marketing - it does seem more natural..

"It seems most members here agree that he is hiding most of his real links which have got him here."

Okay, but what type of links, and what percentage does he use?
Maybe there are similar case studies, please let us know.

To be frank i don't know. How can you say that 100% ? can you please clarify that?

he is hiding his big Backlink, i know a site who do that too, 1st in every kw i wanted to be and nothing really good in Ahrefs.

OP you fell for viral marketing for rankcrew.com - that's all there is to this "method".
